Sketches in Venetan Dialectology opens a laboratory for Venetan linguistics. Through interconnected studies on morphology, textual functions, sociolinguistic variation, and lexical and toponymic microhistory, it explores the Venetan diasystem as a complex and historically stratified configuration. Particular attention is devoted to verbal morphology – including the competing conditional paradigms – whose internal organisation helps clarify broader patterns of variation across northern Italo-Romance. By moving from micro-analysis to theoretical synthesis, the volume shows how local evidence can illuminate general linguistic structure.
Enrico Castro is an FNS postdoctoral researcher at the University of Lausanne, where he is working on the development of a Historical Grammar of Venetian. He is also an adjunct professor of Dialettologia Italiana and Lessico e Toponomastica at the University of Padua. His research interests lie primarily in the fields of dialectology and language change, with a particular focus on morphology, lexicon and toponomastics.
